CHOICE Participation at the XV Congress on Agri-Food Economics, Granada

From 3 to 5 September 2025, CHOICE was represented at the XV Congress on Agri-Food Economics, held in Granada, Spain. The event brought together nearly 300 participants, including academics, researchers, and policy actors from Spain and the Ibero-American region, offering a space for deep reflection on the future of agri-food systems.

BIOAZUL and Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Andalucía (CAAND) jointly participated in the congress, contributing to both the European and international perspectives of the event. Their presence created valuable opportunities to share ongoing work and engage in meaningful dialogue on sustainability transitions in agriculture.

Poster Presentation: Insights from the Spanish Pilot

As part of the programme, BIOAZUL and CAAND co-presented a poster on the CHOICE project, specifically focused on the Spanish pilot case. This pilot applies a Systems Innovation Approach (SIA) to identify and support climate-smart strategies in the olive farming sector in Andalusia—a region central to Spain’s agricultural identity and environmental landscape.

The poster outlined the stepwise co-creation process CHOICE is facilitating through workshops and stakeholder mapping, and highlighted insights from early engagements. These include the importance of actor collaboration, continuous training, and economic viability in encouraging adoption of sustainable practices.

The poster drew strong attention from academics and institutional attendees, particularly those from Ibero-American universities, who shared parallel challenges and interests in applying inclusive innovation methodologies in their own regions.

Enhancing Exchange and Collaboration

In addition to CHOICE, BIOAZUL also presented AquaSure, an INNOWWIDE-funded water filtration innovation developed with smallholder trout farmers in Colombia. The parallel presence of both projects—CHOICE and AquaSure—helped illustrate how co-creation, behavioural insight, and local engagement can generate scalable, context-driven solutions in different parts of the world.

Across sessions and informal exchanges, the CHOICE team engaged with researchers exploring policy innovation, system resilience, and farmer participation. The congress offered rich ground for identifying potential synergies between European and Latin American food system transformation efforts.

Advancing CHOICE’s Outreach Strategy

HOICE’s involvement in the XV Congress served as a key touchpoint within its broader strategy to connect science, policy, and practice through stakeholder engagement. Rather than a one-way dissemination effort, this participation supported a two-way flow of ideas—bringing CHOICE’s pilot experience to the forefront while absorbing lessons from a global academic and professional community.

By participating in events that bring together a diversity of perspectives and regions, CHOICE continues to strengthen its role as a platform for inclusive, knowledge-based climate action in the food, agriculture, and land-use sectors.
