CHOICE Promotes Sustainable and Profitable Livestock Farming at OVIPOR’s 2026 Livestock Conference in Spain

On 16 September 2026, CHOICE participated in the OVIPOR Livestock Conference 2026, held in Calañas, Huelva, Spain, bringing sustainable farming practices closer to local livestock producers.

Representing CHOICE partner Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Andalucía (CAAND), Obdulia Parra, R&D&I Technician, presented three awareness campaigns designed to encourage the adoption of more sustainable and economically viable livestock farming practices.

Organised by the OVIPOR cooperative, the event brought together approximately 90 participants, primarily local livestock farmers and sector representatives, to explore challenges and opportunities in livestock management, with a particular focus on Iberian pig, beef cattle and sheep farming.

The conference provided a valuable opportunity for CHOICE to engage directly with farming communities in a municipality with a strong livestock production tradition, highlighting how environmental sustainability and economic profitability can go hand in hand.

Three Campaigns for a More Sustainable Livestock Sector

Under the common message “Ganaderías con Futuro, Ganaderías más Rentables” (Livestock Farms with a Future, More Profitable Livestock Farms), CHOICE introduced three campaigns showcasing practical approaches to improving livestock management, with the potential to reduce environmental impacts while supporting farm profitability.

1. Digitalisation for Smarter Livestock Management

The first campaign, “Want Your Livestock Farm to Be More Profitable? Go Digital!”, highlighted how digital technologies can contribute to more efficient, productive and sustainable livestock farming.

Through practical examples, participants were introduced to innovative tools such as GPS collars, drones, water-monitoring sensors and mobile applications that can support animal monitoring, optimise resource management and simplify daily farming operations.

By embracing digital solutions, livestock farmers can improve decision-making, enhance animal welfare and increase the efficiency of their operations.

2. Sustainable Pasture Management for Healthier Farms

The second campaign, “Want Your Livestock Farm to Be More Profitable? Improve Your Pastures!”, focused on the environmental and economic benefits of responsible pasture management.

The campaign presented sustainable practices such as rotational grazing, adapting livestock density to the natural capacity of the land and maintaining healthy vegetation cover.

These approaches can contribute to improved soil health, carbon sequestration, animal welfare and greater resilience, while helping farmers reduce dependence on external agricultural inputs.

3. Clean Energy for More Efficient Livestock Production

The third campaign, “Want Your Livestock Farm to Be More Profitable? Invest in Clean Energy!”, explored how renewable energy and technological innovation can support a more sustainable and competitive livestock sector.

Using examples from dairy farming, the campaign demonstrated the potential of solar panels, battery storage and automated farming systems to reduce fossil fuel dependence, optimise energy consumption and improve daily farm management.

By integrating renewable energy and innovative technologies, livestock farms can work towards reducing operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions while improving overall efficiency.

Connecting Sustainability with the Realities of Livestock Farming

A central message of CHOICE’s participation was that the transition towards more sustainable livestock production must also consider the economic realities faced by farmers.

For livestock producers, adopting climate-conscious practices requires solutions that are not only environmentally beneficial but also practical, accessible and economically feasible.

Through the presentation of the three campaigns, CHOICE showcased how innovation, responsible resource management and renewable energy can offer opportunities to address environmental challenges while supporting the long-term viability of livestock farming.

The event also highlighted the importance of directly engaging farmers and agricultural communities, ensuring that sustainability messages are connected to their everyday experiences, needs and priorities.

Advancing CHOICE's Spanish Pilot Activities

CHOICE’s participation in the OVIPOR Livestock Conference forms part of its broader engagement activities in Spain, led by Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Andalucía.

Through its Spanish pilot, the project seeks to promote climate-conscious behavioural change among olive growers and livestock producers in Andalusia, encouraging the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices that can contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of the agri-food sector.

By bringing its awareness campaigns directly to local farming communities, CHOICE aims to make sustainable practices more accessible, support informed decision-making and encourage a transition towards more resilient agricultural systems.

Initiatives like this demonstrate CHOICE’s commitment to connecting climate action with practical, locally relevant solutions, contributing to a future where livestock farming can be both more sustainable and more profitable.
