CHOICE at the SALTO Green Conference in Paris: Connecting Research, Education and Sustainable Behaviour

On 13–14 October 2026,  CHOICE participated in the SALTO Green Conference, “GO GREEN: Knowledge into Practice,” held at the Maison de l’Europe in Paris, France, highlighting how scientific research and innovative educational approaches can encourage sustainable behaviour.

Representing CHOICE, Dr Ilias Karachalios from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) contributed to the conference on 14 October through a presentation and an interactive workshop, showcasing how research-driven communication strategies and participatory learning can support sustainability education and climate-conscious choices.

Bridging Research and Sustainability Education

During his presentation, “How Research Feeds Sustainability Education,” Dr Karachalios explored how scientific evidence can inform educational practices and support meaningful behavioural change.

He introduced the CHOICE project and its five pilot initiatives in Austria, Colombia, Greece, South Africa and Spain, explaining how the project investigates behavioural drivers and barriers to sustainability and develops targeted communication campaigns adapted to different communities and local contexts.

The presentation highlighted CHOICE’s evidence-based approach, which combines research, campaign co-design, implementation and evaluation to understand how people respond to sustainability messages and how these insights can strengthen future interventions.

Exploring Behavioural Change Through an Interactive Workshop

In addition to his presentation, Dr Karachalios delivered an interactive workshop focused on A/B testing and the communication campaigns developed within CHOICE.

The workshop invited participants to explore how different communication approaches can influence attitudes, engagement and perceptions of sustainability. By examining alternative campaign messages, participants had the opportunity to reflect on the role of behavioural insights in developing more effective environmental education strategies.

As part of the activity, surveys were distributed to collect participants’ feedback and responses, providing additional research material intended to contribute to a forthcoming scientific publication.

This approach demonstrated how interactive educational activities can serve not only as tools for awareness-raising but also as opportunities to gather evidence that informs future research and communication strategies.

Turning Scientific Knowledge into Climate Action

CHOICE’s participation in the SALTO Green Conference reflected the project’s commitment to making scientific knowledge more accessible and translating research findings into practical approaches that support sustainable food systems.

By connecting behavioural research with education, participatory activities and evidence-based communication campaigns, CHOICE aims to empower individuals and communities to make more informed, climate-conscious decisions.

The conference provided an opportunity to share CHOICE’s methodologies with an international educational audience, reinforcing the importance of research-informed, inclusive and participatory approaches to sustainability education.
