CHOICE on the Airwaves: Livestock Campaign Featured on Rural Radio in Andalusia
On 23 December 2025, CHOICE was presented to a broad rural audience through a special feature on the Andalusian radio show La Voz de la Dehesa, broadcast weekly by COPE Sierra Norte and coordinated by CorSevilla. The episode featured Raquel González from Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de Andalucía (CAAND), lead partner of the Spanish pilot.
In the interview, Raquel introduced the ongoing CHOICE activities in the livestock sector, highlighting how digital tools, cover crops, and solar energy are enabling Andalusian farmers to become more resilient, efficient, and climate-conscious—without compromising profitability.
Building on the 2nd Spanish Pilot Campaign
This radio appearance follows the launch of CHOICE’s second Spanish pilot campaign (the first focused on the livestock sector) at the XIX Jornada Técnica Ganadera on 27 November in Cazalla de la Sierra. That campaign, themed “Do you want to make your livestock farming more profitable? Go digital”, spotlighted real-life solutions being implemented by farmers across the dehesa.
In the radio interview, Raquel elaborated on those efforts and emphasized the CHOICE principle:
“We’re not talking about big changes,” Raquel noted, “but practical decisions that make farms more efficient, profitable, and respectful to the environment.”
From Co-Creation to Practical Solutions
Raquel explained how Participatory Labs, co-organised with cooperatives and research bodies (like CorSevilla, COBAP, BIPOR, Merino del Sur, Los Remedios-Picasat, and IFAPA) helped identify barriers and co-design viable solutions for sustainable livestock farming. Among the highlighted practices are the following:
- Digitalisation – including solar-powered sensors for water monitoring, mobile apps, GPS collars, and drones for remote livestock management
- Cover crops – to enhance soil structure, retain water, and improve biodiversity
- Solar panels – to reduce energy costs and emissions, and build long-term resilience
These were selected through participatory prioritisation methods with sector stakeholders, ensuring alignment with real-world needs.
Real Farmers, Real Impact
The first livestock-focused video campaign features Juan Ignacio Fontán, a lifelong farmer from Alanís, who demonstrates how digital tools are transforming traditional farming in the dehesa. His testimony highlights how technology, when adapted to local contexts, can improve working conditions, animal welfare, and environmental stewardship.
“Technology is helping us manage more efficiently, with less effort and better outcomes, for our animals and for the environment,” says Mr. Fontán in the livestock campaign video.
Several of the tools showcased are also part of the DEMOFARM project of the Andalusian Regional Government, which promotes innovation on demonstration farms. Watch the full video on YouTube.
What’s Next
The CHOICE pilot in Spain includes a total of six campaigns—three focused on livestock and three on the olive sector. With two already implemented, four campaigns remain in 2026, including upcoming outreach on cover crops and solar panels in the livestock sector.
The radio interview helped further amplify farmer engagement, directing listeners to participate in CHOICE’s ongoing survey and visit the campaign landing page to access resources and join the network of producers embracing climate-smart agriculture.
