Food, Data-Driven Climate Awareness, Action: Discover CHOICE’s First Data Stories Collection
The CHOICE project is pleased to release its first Data Stories Portfolio, a first collection of visual data stories developed to engage audiences with the environmental impacts of food choices, using pilot-relevant data and tailored communication formats.
This initial collection presents ten data stories that highlight the hidden environmental impacts of everyday food choices—covering themes related to cow milk and beef consumption and food waste. The stories are rooted in the Greek and South African pilot cases, using data relevant to each pilot pursuits and context.
What Will You Find in the Portfolio?
The portfolio contains ten engaging visual stories that reveal the often-unseen environmental consequences of common food choices.
From comparing the emissions of cow milk and its plant-based alternatives, to translating food waste into lost energy and water resources, the portfolio invites readers to look at their plates differently. Key story themes include:
- Cow’s milk vs. plant-based milk: understanding the climate impact and energy use associated with dairy milk, compared to plant-based alternatives.

- Beef, VS chicken and soy: illustrating the environmental impact of these protein sources, emphasising beef’s higher water and energy use and CO₂ emissions to promote more sustainable dietary choices.

- Food waste in South Africa: uncovering the hidden cost of spoiled or discarded food by exposing the water, energy, and emissions wasted when food goes uneaten.

These stories aim to raise awareness, spark reflection, and encourage small changes in everyday choices that can lead to meaningful climate action.
