About

ICCS, the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, is a non-profit Academic Research Body established in 1989 by the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs to carry applied Research and Development activities in the areas of telecommunications, computer systems and their applications in a variety of research themes. ICCS is linked to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and in particular with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).

In Choice, ICCS is represented by one of its Research Groups, the I-SENSE Group. I-SENSE Group consists of more than 150 researchers of various ranks and is very active in a number of scientific and research areas, with main application areas being the Intelligent Transportation Systems, the Virtual Environments, the Assistive Technologies and the Smart Integrated Systems & Communications. I-SENSE has coordinated and participated in more than 150 Research Projects, both EU funded and National ones, over the last 20 years, and has worked with several industry leaders since its establishment in 2002. Next to Choice, I-SENSE is currently coordinating the following projects: THEROS, CIROCCO, THETIDA, DELPHI, ELABORATOR, NIGHTINGALE, EVENTS, EIFFEL, XGAIN, PODIUM, RURBANIVE, TERRAVISION, ENVELOPE, W2W and Battery2Life.

ICCS consists of more than 50 labs, research groups and teams, dealing with all aspects of Electrical and Computer Engineering and employs approximately 800 researchers and scientists including Faculty Members, permanent or long-term Researchers.

Role in CHOICE

ICCS plays a central role in the project, leading the coordination efforts throughout the 3-year duration. ICCS is responsible for project administration and financial coordination while also oversees technical coordination, ensuring the quality and managing risks, while also establishing data management guidelines in accordance with ethical considerations and both national and European regulations.

One of the key contributions is the development of the CHOICE integrated applications. ICCS aims to simplify and enhance accessibility for end-users to the well-known FELIX model, making it more user-friendly and understandable. Additionally, ICCS will create a “Shrink Your Food Waste” app, utilizing data stories and assessment models to encourage behavioral change towards more climate-friendly practices. These tools and applications will not just be conceptual but will be practically demonstrated and assessed in diverse locations, including Greece, Austria, South Africa, Spain and Colombia. The involvement of various stakeholders in these countries will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the developed solutions.

The ultimate goal is to utilize the results obtained from these demonstrations to explore potential market entry strategies and scaling opportunities. By promoting behavioral change at a broader level, our project seeks to encourage more responsible food consumption and foster climate-friendly behavior. ICCS is committed to making a meaningful impact by developing practical tools and applications that address real world challenges and contribute to positive changes in how we approach food waste and environmental sustainability.
